There was hardly a dry eye in our school hall on April 6th last when we bade a sad, yet very fond farewell to our principal Mrs Maguire when she retired after 43 years of dedicated service to our school. Mrs Maguire began her career in July 1974 in Fair Street and moved to Ballymakenny Rd in Sept 1974 when the new school opened. Therefore, that means Mrs Maguire is the last serving
teacher in our school who also taught in the old school in Fair St!
Apart from being the principal of our school for the past four and a half years Mrs Maguire taught in many different classes and has put many “Mammies” and even “Grannies” of our current pupils through her hands! She prepared many classes for Confirmation, worked in Learning Support for many years and served as Deputy Principal from 2006 to 2012. Throughout all her years she proved to be a hard working and caring teacher…someone who put the interests of her students first. She instilled a love of Nature and a love of the Lord in many children. Nano Nagle was her inspiration and Mrs Maguire made sure that all the Presentation girls knew the story of Nano!
So, with an invited audience of family members, principal teachers, retired staff of Presentation and some special friends of Mrs Maguire present the girls paid some richly deserved tributes to their principal. They excelled themselves with a variety of performances that included songs, poetry, drama and dance.
We heard “Limerick, you’re a Lady” (in honour of Mrs Maguire’s home county) from Rm. 11, a “Principal’s Poem” from Rm.12, a contemporary dance called “Neverland” from Rm.2, while 6th class girls sang “Thank you for the Days”, “I’ll always remember you” and “Time of our Lives”. Rm.6 recited a thought provoking poem titled “The Heart of the Teacher” with an accompanying mime prepared by our Drama teacher, Jaymie. Rm.5 presented Mrs Maguire with a “Retirement Survival Kit”…something that every prospective retiree might like! Other performances included 3rd classes singing “Down by the Salley Gardens” and Rm.13 singing “Ain’t no Mountain High
Enough” The concert concluded with our own unique version of the ABBA hit from 1978 “Thank You for the Music”. Mrs Maguire thoroughly enjoyed every item and shed a little tear too!
Following the concert Mrs Maguire was presented with gifts. These included a hand made book which had a page for every month of the year to represent all 12 classes in the school and flowers signed by every student in the school. We thank Ms. Malone for her help and expertise in putting the book together and also “We print” in Drogheda for their professional binding service. The girls also presented Mrs Maguire with a Bird House made by the Men’s Shed in Drogheda and a bouquet of flowers. Representatives of the Parents’ Association also had a gift for our retiring Principal.

In her “Thank You” speech Mrs Maguire was very appreciative of all the time and effort that was invested in her farewell concert. Indeed, her heart swelled with pride when she saw every girl performing at her best. And….. not to be outdone, Mrs Maguire had her own little surprise up her
sleeve! She performed an unaccompanied solo of that famous Julie Andrews song, “Getting to know you…” and left us all stunned.
Go n-eiri an bothar leat, Mrs Maguire. Long life, health and happiness to you and your family.

The Green schools committee made fabulous peanut bird feeders using larch wood with the help of Clare from OWLS. The girls in Ms.Lynch’s class also made beautiful bird feeders from milk cartons. The children in each class have been enjoying feeding the birds and we have seen a big increase in the number of birds visiting our school grounds.

As part of Biodiversity Week each class completed a project on a native tree, plant, flower, animal, bird or insect. The projects which are on display in the corridors look fantastic and are full of interesting facts.
Well done to the girls in Mrs.White’s 4th class who composed the winning Greencode:
Presentation is our name,
Biodiversity is our aim.
Caring for the birds and trees,
And making homes for the bugs and bees.

Today Clare from OWLS helped us fill our bug hotel with materials to attract more insects into our school garden. She showed us how to safely use a saw and drill. It was great to have a hands-on session. We worked as a team and we are so proud of our new bug hotel. Four insects have moved in already – a caterpillar, a slug, a beetle and a snail.

Today Dale Treadwell who has appeared on many children’s TV shows spent the day in our school. His sessions were fun, energetic and full of cool facts about biodiversity. He read his two books to the classes – ‘Harry the Hedgehog’ and ‘Robby the Christmas Robin’. At lunchtime he kindly helped the Green Schools committee plant a bee and butterfly garden in one of our raised beds. They planted a buddleia, a sunflower, lavender, lupins and wildflower seeds. We look forward to seeing it in bloom later in the year.

After Christmas, our school along with the other schools involved in the Drogheda Moves Project will be getting involved in Operation Transformation. Last year the parents of our school along with the parents of St Brigid’s, St Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s took part in Operation Transformation and the group had great fun. This year we will be expanding our participation. We will have fitness classes once a week with Sean Kilroy a well-known local personal trainer. Parents will have the option to be weighed in or measured each week. We will also have health and nutrition talks throughout the 8 weeks that the project is running.

Attendance at school is very important.  This year we are trying to reduce the number of children missing more than 20 days at school, as we have to report these cases to the N.E.W.B.  If your child misses a day at school a note must be sent into the class teacher to explain her absence.

In the mornings children are asked to wait on the path behind the wall until the school gates open. Motorists may enter the roundabout to drop off their children only (no parking is allowed).

In the evenings children exit the school via the playground gate and walk behind the wall to leave the school grounds. Children who travel on buses are also asked to walk behind the wall and follow the yellow footprints to their bus stop. Children who travel home by car are asked to wait in the yellow box alongside the playground gate until a parent/guardian collects them.

Parking is NOT allowed on the roundabout at or before 2.45pm. We appreciate your cooperation in implementing these safety measures for your children.
