imageA big well done to Ms. Benton and her class who appeared on Swipe TV on Monday. The two girls who played on behalf of the class Chidiebere and Leila did extremely well and were in the lead for most of the show. It was only Ms. Benton’s speedy ability at making sandwiches that saved her from getting gunged in the end. If you missed the show and would like to see it you can catch it on rte player, it’ll only be available for 19 days, so watch it soon. 5th and 6th class pupils took part in our first Eason Spelling Bee competition recently. Each class held their own internal Spelling Bee and the six overall winners went forward to the ‘Grand School Final’. A tense and anxious audience eagerly supported and cheered the extremely focussed spellers. The two finalists, Alison G and Zoha K, brought the audience to the edge of their seats when they battled through a series of tie-breaker rounds until one pupil emerged victorious, Zoha K.
We look forward to supporting Zoha as she will now represent our school in the upcoming county finals in Dundalk on May 2nd.Congratulations to Zoha and well done to all the spellers for making our Eason Spelling Bee competition an extremely enjoyable event.

Garda Eugene Mulligan and Garda Helen Donnelly gave the children an interesting and informative talk about road safety. Here are some of the important points made by Garda Eugene:
• Always wear a seatbelt in the car.
• Always wear a helmet when cycling.
• Look all around and listen carefully when crossing the road.
• Watch out for your friends.

Despite being a cold morning our first WOW and COW day was a huge success. In total 180 girls walked or cycled to school. This is 52% of our school population. A total of 340 travelled to school by sustainable modes of transport. This is a whopping 92% of our pupils! The first winners of the Golden Boot Award are Ms.Whelan’s 5th class and the first winners of the Golden Globe Award are Ms.Kilcoyne’s 4th class. Well done to all pupils who participated in the event and we hope to see continued success with our new initiative.

On Wednesday 23rd May Ms Whelan’s class held their own class olympic games. The children worked together in groups representing different countries and participated in a number of activities including sprints, relays, hurdles, javelin throwing and the long jump. The girls really enjoyed their day and are now eagerly awaiting the games this summer.

The girls in Mrs.White’s and Ms. Whelan’s class were invited to attend a soup kitchen in the yard of the Drogheda Borough Council last Thursday. This was one of many events organised in the town to commemorate the Great Famine. Mary Kennedy, presenter of Nationwide, was also in attendance. Grace Callan from Mrs.White’s class read an extract from the novel Under the Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlon-McKenna. Tune in to Nationwide on RTE1 tomorrow to see this event.

On Friday 20th January Miss Whelan’s fifth class went to the Droichead Arts Centre to participate in an art workshop held by Artist Claire Halpin. The girls got the opportunity to view some of Claire’s work and to make their own creations which are now on display in the school.
