Mrs. White, Mrs.Costello and two of our Green school committee members, Olivia and Michaela, attended the Louth County Authorities Environment Awards in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk. We were thrilled to learn that we had retained our platinum award status for the third year. The judges who visited our school recently gave us very high marks under each section (litter, waste and energy management, appearance of school grounds and awareness of the pupils. Because we were one of the top six schools in the county our school will be fitted with a ‘Climote’, a gadget to control heating via text messages! Hopefully this award winning gadget with help us to make further reductions in our heating costs.

We would like to congratulate Katie McQuillan who received the Runners Up prize in the 2012 Junior Environmentalist of the Year competition. Katie was interviewed for the award. The judges were extremely impressed by how articulate and well informed Katie was on environmental issues. Katie received a specially engraved crystal clock, a framed commemorative certificate and a gift token in recognition of her achievement. Once again we would like to congratulate Katie for representing our school so well and we hope she will continue to take an active role in Green school’s programme in the future.

Our Gaelic team played in the Corn Oriel league recently, the first competition of the school year. We won our first game against ‘Scoil Aonghusa’ but were unfortunately defeated in our second game against ‘Scoil Mhuire na Trócaire’ Ardee, who are now through to the next round. The girls played extremely well and scored some great points.

The following girls were on the team:
Emma, Megan, Lauren, Gráinne, Aoife (Room 14)
Órlaith, Sally, Abygail, Rachel (Room 15)
Aoife, Ellen, Caoimhe, Julieanne, Aislinn (Room 18)

Well done to all involved!

Mrs. White and Ms.Carroll’s pupils visited the Jeanie Johnston Tall ship which is docked in Dublin’s city centre. It is an accurate replica of the original ship which sailed between Tralee, Co. Kerry and North America from 1847 to 1855. The girls got to see what life was like on board a wooden tall ship during the Famine era. The highlight of the tour was hearing the stories of the life-sized figures based on actual passengers who sailed on the ship. Thank you to Louth Leader Partnership who provided the funding for this wonderful trip.

The 4th class girls had a wonderful time at Tayto Park before the summer holidays. Some brave girls completed the high ropes course while other pupils enjoyed the air jumpers and water balloon canons. After lunch the children had a tour of the Tayto factory where they could see the crisps being made and packed. Later the children had a guided tour of the animals which included wallabies, buffaloes and squirrel monkeys. The children were reluctant to leave the Pow-wow playground but they could look forward to receiving complimentary bags of Tayto crisps on their way home!
